Course Description:

This introductory course offers a comprehensive foundation in pelvic floor therapy for physical and occupational therapists, providing essential knowledge and practical skills to effectively evaluate and treat pelvic floor dysfunction. The course covers relevant anatomy 
and physiology, common conditions affecting the pelvic floor, and evidence-based assessment and treatment approaches. 
Participants will gain a solid understanding of the role and function of the pelvic floor muscles, as well as the impact of various factors such as posture, breathing, and core stability on pelvic floor health. The course delves into common diagnoses, including pelvic pain, incontinence, and sexual dysfunction, along with the principles of differential diagnosis. Through a combination of lectures, case studies, and hands-on labs, attendees will learn how to perform thorough evaluations, including internal and external assessment 
techniques. They will also acquire a diverse range of treatment strategies, such as manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, biofeedback, and patient education. Emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach, the course discusses the importance of collaboration with other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. Upon completion, participants will be equipped with the foundational knowledge and skills to confidently integrate pelvic floor therapy into their clinical practice, enhancing their ability to provide comprehensive care for patients with pelvic floor dysfunction.

This introductory lab component will provide you with a strong foundation to be able to treat common pelvic floor diagnoses starting on Monday. This lab will cover both vaginal and rectal assessments and treatments for the female population. We will review hands-on skills including connective tissue manipulation and trigger point releases. There will also be more case study discussion that will expand your clinical reasoning to treat the pelvic health population.

This course will empower you to:

  • To do a confident external and internal pelvic floor examination for the female population. 
  • Provide a clear framework for why and when you should do a rectal and vaginal examination with a concise pathway for effective treatment strategies to apply to your patient population.
  • Be comfortable with appropriate verbal and tactile cues needed for the patient to succeed.
  • Comprehend the anatomy and functionality of the pelvic floor muscles. 
  • ​​Acquire knowledge of exercises and techniques to enhance pelvic floor strength and function, including Kegel exercises, downtraining, and breathing methods.
  • -Appreciate the significance of proper posture and body mechanics in maintaining pelvic floor health.

Audience:

For Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapist Assistants, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, all Students are welcome.  
This course does include internal and external manual therapy skills surrounding the genital region.This course content is not intended for use by any participants outside the scope of their license or regulation. You will need to check with your practice act for what is within your scope. 
Continuing Education Credit:
Physical therapy and occupational therapy credit will be offered in the state the course is hosted. 
This course is flexible in that you can attend live: in person or digitally. 
 If you attend digitally, you must have a partner to practice the internal skills on. 
 If your partner could be a class participant, even better!
